What Is AI Search Market Share?

AI search market share is the distribution of user adoption across AI answer engines — how many people ask their questions in ChatGPT versus Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, or Google's AI Overviews. For GEO programs it is the weighting layer: visibility in an engine only matters in proportion to the audience asking questions there, so per-engine investment should roughly follow per-engine audience.

How the market currently splits

Two properties dominate through different mechanisms. ChatGPT leads destination usage — OpenAI announced 800 million weekly active users at DevDay in October 2025 — while Google inserts AI answers into existing search behavior: AI Overviews, launched at I/O in May 2024, reached more than 1.5 billion monthly users per Google's 2025 earnings commentary. Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, and Grok compose a second tier whose share varies sharply by audience: technical, research-heavy users over-index on Perplexity and Claude relative to their general-population numbers.

Why audience share should drive GEO effort

  • Zero-sum attention. Every category question is asked somewhere; an engine you ignore is a share of your prompt space conceded by default.
  • Different engines, different mechanics. AI Overviews inherit Google's index and ranking; Perplexity leans on its own crawler (PerplexityBot) and live retrieval; ChatGPT blends parametric memory with OAI-SearchBot browsing. Effort allocation determines which mechanics you learn.
  • Category skew beats global stats. Measure where your buyers ask — assistant referral segments in analytics and visibility tracking per engine reveal the true local distribution.

Example

A B2B data-infrastructure brand finds global market-share numbers misleading: 41% of its AI referral signups arrive from Perplexity despite Perplexity's low single-digit general share. The team re-weights: Perplexity-first freshness and citation work, ChatGPT second, AI Overviews third — the reverse of what raw adoption stats suggested.

Re-check the distribution quarterly. Model releases and product launches (SearchGPT's July 2024 announcement, for instance) can shift where question volume flows within a single quarter.

Frequently asked questions

Which AI assistant has the most users right now?
ChatGPT leads consumer assistant adoption by a wide margin — OpenAI reported 800 million weekly active users in October 2025 — while Google's AI Overviews reach over 1.5 billion searchers monthly by riding existing Google usage. Rankings below those two shift quarter to quarter.
Should I optimize for every AI engine equally?
No. Weight effort by where your audience actually asks questions, adjusted for referral quality and category fit. A developer-tools brand may find Claude and Perplexity punch far above their general-market share; a consumer brand usually should prioritize ChatGPT and AI Overviews first.
