What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that answer engines — Google's direct-answer features, voice assistants, and AI chatbots — can extract it and present it as the answer to a user's question. AEO targets the answer itself, not the ranking position: the goal is to be the passage a machine reads aloud, boxes at the top of results, or weaves into a generated response.

Why did AEO emerge before GEO?

AEO's roots are in featured snippets, which Google introduced in 2014, and in voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant that read a single answer aloud. Marketers learned that concise, well-structured passages placed directly under question-shaped headings won those placements. When generative engines arrived — ChatGPT Search in October 2024, Google AI Overviews in May 2024 — the same extraction-friendly formatting turned out to be what RAG pipelines retrieve and quote. AEO practice flowed directly into GEO.

How does AEO differ from and overlap with GEO?

DimensionAEOGEO
Primary targetDirect-answer extraction (snippets, voice, answer boxes)Mentions and citations in generated answers
Unit of optimizationThe passage under a headingPassages, entities, and off-site consensus
HeritageFeatured snippets, voice search (2014+)GEO research paper, KDD 2024

The overlap is the core craft: answer-first writing, question-shaped H2s, and self-contained passages of roughly 40-80 words serve both.

What are the core on-page tactics?

Effective AEO comes down to a repeatable checklist: mirror real question phrasing in headings, answer completely in the first two or three sentences, use numbered lists for processes and tables for comparisons, mark up pages with schema.org FAQPage or QAPage types, and keep each passage self-contained so it survives being quoted alone. The full sequence is covered in the AEO checklist.

Example

A payments company restructures its "What is 3D Secure?" page: definition in the first 40 words, an H2 for each follow-up question, FAQPage markup. The page wins the featured snippet, and the same passage later appears verbatim in Google's AI Overview for the query.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO grew out of featured-snippet optimization and focuses on formatting content for direct-answer extraction. GEO is broader: it covers citations, brand mentions, and recommendations across generative engines. In practice the tactics overlap heavily, and the industry is converging on GEO as the umbrella term.
Does AEO still matter now that AI Overviews exist?
Yes — arguably more. The extraction logic that powered featured snippets feeds directly into how AI Overviews and chat assistants select passages. Content formatted for answer extraction is exactly what RAG pipelines lift into generated responses.
