What Is a Backlink?

A backlink is a hyperlink on one website pointing to another. Since PageRank — the algorithm Brin and Page published in 1998 — links have functioned as editorial votes: a page linked from many trusted places is presumed more trustworthy itself. Backlinks remain the backbone of classic search authority and the core input to third-party scores like Moz DA and Ahrefs DR.

The classic mechanics

Not all links count equally. Engines weigh the linking page's own authority, topical relevance between the two pages, the anchor text's descriptiveness, and editorial intent — a citation in a news article outweighs a footer link or paid placement, and Google's link spam policies discount manipulative patterns outright. The rel="nofollow", rel="sponsored", and rel="ugc" attributes let publishers label links that shouldn't pass endorsement.

Where backlinks sit in the AI citation pipeline

Answer engines don't run PageRank over your brand at answer time, but backlinks operate upstream of everything they do:

  1. Crawl priority — well-linked pages get discovered and refreshed faster by all crawlers, AI crawlers included.
  2. Index ranking — retrieval typically starts from search-index results; links help pages be in that candidate set.
  3. Citation selection — from the candidates, engines pick passages that answer cleanly. Here links stop helping; extractability takes over.

So a backlink gets you into the room; it doesn't win the argument. The GEO study (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024) found on-page changes like added statistics and citations lifted generative visibility 30-40% — evidence that the last step is decided by content, not links.

Example

Two vendors compete on "contract lifecycle management" prompts. Vendor A holds triple the referring domains; Vendor B's guide is answer-first with a comparison table. ChatGPT search retrieves both — links earned each a seat — but predominantly quotes Vendor B. Vendor A's visibility gap isn't a link problem, and more link building won't fix it.

Frequently asked questions

Do backlinks matter for AI search visibility?
Yes, but one step removed. Backlinks help pages rank in the indexes answer engines retrieve from — Bing for ChatGPT search, Google for AI Overviews — so they influence which candidates enter the answer. The final citation choice then depends on passage quality.
Are backlinks or mentions more valuable now?
They solve different problems. Links move crawl priority and retrieval trust; mentions shape what language models believe about your brand from training data. Mature off-page programs pursue coverage that delivers both — an editorial link inside a substantive brand mention.
