What Is Domain Authority?

Domain Authority (DA) is a 1-100 score created by Moz that predicts a domain's ranking strength, computed primarily from the quantity and quality of links pointing at it. Ahrefs Domain Rating (DR) and Semrush Authority Score are parallel metrics. All use logarithmic scales — climbing from 20 to 30 is far easier than from 70 to 80 — and all are third-party estimates, not values any engine actually uses.

What the scores are good for — and not

As comparative gauges, they work: a DR 75 domain almost certainly commands more link trust than a DR 25 one, and agencies use the scores to vet PR targets and benchmark competitors. The failure mode is treating the number as the objective. Google has stated it has no single sitewide authority metric; ranking and retrieval decisions happen at page and passage level, informed by many signals the scores can't see — content quality, topical depth, user behavior, entity reputation.

What authority means to an answer engine

Answer engines need a different question answered: can this source be safely quoted? Their working notion of authority blends several inputs, none of which is a Moz score.

  • Retrieval trust — domains whose pages consistently rank in the underlying index (Bing for ChatGPT search, Google for AI Overviews) get retrieved more.
  • Corpus reputation — how the brand is described across training data: review sites, news, forums.
  • Topical depthtopical authority frequently beats generic link mass; a specialist blog out-cites Forbes inside its niche.
  • Verifiability — named authors, primary sources, and consistent entity data lower the perceived risk of quoting.

Example

In one B2B category, competitor benchmarking showed a DR 38 specialist publisher earning more ChatGPT citations for category prompts than a DR 90 business media site — the specialist's pages were answer-first and complete, while the giant's coverage was shallow. Link authority opened the retrieval door; extractable substance won the citation.

Frequently asked questions

Is Domain Authority a Google ranking factor?
No. DA is Moz's proprietary metric, and Google has repeatedly stated it uses no equivalent single site-wide authority score. DA, Ahrefs DR, and Semrush Authority Score are third-party estimates built mostly from link data — useful for comparison, not gospel.
Does a high DA help with AI citations?
Indirectly. The link profiles that produce high DA correlate with the crawl priority and source trust answer engines apply, and studies of AI Overview citations show overlap with high-ranking domains. But engines cite specific extractable passages, and niche sites with modest DA regularly out-cite generalist giants inside their specialty.
