What Is Deep Research in AI Engines?

Deep Research is the class of agentic AI modes that investigate a question over minutes rather than seconds: the model plans a research strategy, issues waves of searches, browses dozens to hundreds of pages, and compiles a long-form, citation-rich report. Google introduced Gemini Deep Research in December 2024; OpenAI and Perplexity shipped their versions in February 2025.

How Deep Research differs from standard AI search

A standard AI answer does one or two retrieval rounds and synthesizes within seconds. Deep Research modes allocate test-time compute to iterate: they decompose the task, search, read, notice gaps, and search again — OpenAI's version runs five to thirty minutes on a single request. That loop multiplies both the number of sources consulted and the scrutiny each receives, since retrieved pages are read as documents rather than skimmed as snippets.

What kind of content wins Deep Research citations

  • Primary sources and original data. Agents chasing verifiable claims cite the dataset or study itself, not the tenth summary of it.
  • Methodology and specificity. Pages that explain how numbers were produced survive the agent's cross-checking step.
  • Comprehensive references. Long, well-structured resources get cited repeatedly within one report because the agent keeps returning to them.
  • Accessible HTML. Agents fetch pages live through user-triggered agents, so bot-blocked or JavaScript-walled content silently drops out of the evidence pool.

Why it matters for brands

Deep Research outputs are decision documents — vendor evaluations, market overviews, technical comparisons — often exported and shared inside buying committees. A citation there carries more persuasive weight than a link in a quick answer, and because reports cite ten to fifty sources, mid-authority domains with genuinely strong material break in more often than in single-answer modes. Tracking these citations separately is worthwhile; a citation tracking setup should tag which answer mode produced each mention.

Example

Ask ChatGPT's deep research for "the USDC vs USDT risk landscape" and it will return a multi-section report citing attestation documents, regulatory filings, and a handful of explainer pages. The explainers that make the cut are the ones with dated facts and named sources — the standard this entire glossary documents.

Frequently asked questions

Which engines offer a Deep Research mode?
Google shipped Gemini Deep Research in December 2024; OpenAI launched deep research in ChatGPT in February 2025; Perplexity followed with its own Deep Research the same month. Similar agentic modes have since spread across most major assistants.
Do Deep Research modes pick sources differently from normal AI search?
Yes. They run many more retrieval rounds, follow links across sites, and reward depth: primary data, methodology detail, and comprehensive reference pages get cited where a quick answer mode would grab the top snippet.
