What Is a GEO Audit?

A GEO audit is a structured assessment of everything standing between a brand and AI citations, worked through in layers: can AI systems access the site, is it indexed where engines retrieve from, does content get retrieved and quoted, is the brand trusted enough to cite, and what does visibility look like today. Each layer gates the next — perfect content behind a bot-blocking WAF scores zero.

What are the layers of a GEO audit?

  1. Crawl access. Check robots.txt rules and actual server responses for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, and CCBot. Testing real fetches matters because CDN bot management frequently blocks agents that robots.txt allows.
  2. Indexing. Verify coverage in both Google and Bing — Bing especially, since ChatGPT Search and Copilot retrieve through it. Bing Webmaster Tools is the underused dashboard here.
  3. Retrievability. Most AI fetchers do not execute JavaScript, so audit what the raw HTML contains versus what the browser renders. Client-side-rendered content is invisible to them.
  4. Extractability. Assess whether key pages yield self-contained, quotable passages: answer-first paragraphs, clean heading hierarchy, tables, schema markup.
  5. Authority and entity clarity. Review third-party presence — Wikipedia/Wikidata, review platforms, consistent naming — that engines use as trust signals.
  6. Measurement baseline. Sample a prompt set across engines and record current mentions, citations, and sentiment, so post-audit work has a before picture.

What does a GEO audit produce?

A prioritized defect list mapped to funnel stage, because stage determines urgency: access blocks are emergencies, extractability gaps are content-roadmap items. The audit's baseline also seeds ongoing tracking — the what-is-GEO guide covers how the funnel stages connect.

Example

A typical audit finding: a SaaS site allowed all AI bots in robots.txt but its WAF challenged them anyway, Bing had indexed 40% of pages Google had, and pricing answers were rendered client-side. Three fixes — WAF allowlist, IndexNow adoption, SSR for money pages — moved measurable citations within a month, following the GEO optimization playbook.

Frequently asked questions

How is a GEO audit different from a technical SEO audit?
It adds AI-specific layers a classic audit skips: AI crawler access (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot rules and WAF behavior), JavaScript dependence since most AI fetchers do not render JS, passage-level extractability, and a baseline of what engines currently say about the brand.
How often should you rerun a GEO audit?
Full audits quarterly or after major site changes; the measurement baseline continuously. Engine behavior shifts with each model release, so an annual audit cadence borrowed from SEO is too slow.
