What Is a Doorway Page?
A doorway page is a page created to rank for a specific query variation while funneling visitors toward a different destination, offering no distinct value of its own. Classic examples: dozens of near-identical "plumber in {city}" pages all routing to one contact form, or keyword-permutation pages that exist only to be an entrance. Doorway abuse has been a named violation in Google's spam policies for years, with a dedicated algorithm update back in 2015.
The line between variant and doorway
Programmatic SEO and doorway spam use the same machinery — templates times data — which is why the distinction matters operationally. The question that separates them: if a user lands here directly, is their specific query fully answered on this page?
| Signal | Legitimate variant | Doorway |
|---|---|---|
| Per-page data | Unique facts per instance (rates, inventory, local details) | Same copy, swapped nouns |
| User destination | The page itself resolves the need | Immediate funnel to one generic page |
| Standalone value | Reads complete in isolation | Meaningless without the mothership |
| Coverage logic | Pages exist where data exists | Pages exist for every keyword permutation |
Why answer engines make doorways doubly worthless
Even where doorway sets dodge Google enforcement, they fail the AI citation test on their own demerits. Retrieval systems embed passages; a hundred near-identical passages collapse into the same region of vector space, and the engine needs only one — which it will take from whichever source says it best, often not you. And a passage whose content is "we serve {city}, call now" contains nothing an answer can quote. Doorways are optimized for a click that answer engines no longer send.
Example
A home-services franchise ran 400 town pages with identical copy; a Search Console manual action wiped them out. The rebuild kept 60 pages — only towns with a real crew, each page showing that crew, verified reviews from that town, and response-time data. Rankings returned, and the pages began appearing in AI answers to "emergency plumber near {town}" prompts, because they finally contained facts worth repeating.

Frequently asked questions
- Are city-specific landing pages doorway pages?
- They are if every city page is the same copy with the city name swapped. They aren't if each page carries location-specific substance — local team, address, service-area facts, local pricing or reviews. The test is whether the page has a reason to exist beyond capturing the query.
- What happens if Google classifies pages as doorways?
- Doorway abuse is a listed spam policy violation: affected pages can be demoted or deindexed algorithmically, and sites can receive manual actions visible in Search Console. Recovery requires removing or consolidating the pages and filing reconsideration.
